GLP-1 telehealth that accepts insurance

How insurance works with GLP-1 telehealth: which parts of the service can be billed to a plan, which providers publish insurance acceptance, what prior authorisation involves, and why compounded medication is never covered.

Two separate questions

“Does the provider accept insurance” hides two: does the plan cover the medication, and does the provider bill the plan for the visit. They have different answers.

The medication. Approved products (Zepbound, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Ozempic) may be covered depending on the plan’s formulary, the diagnosis, and prior authorisation; the prescription goes to a pharmacy that bills the plan and the patient pays a copay. Compounded products are never covered.

The visits. Some providers bill visits to insurance as telehealth encounters; most cash-pay GLP-1 providers do not, and charge a plan, membership or visit fee instead, even when they will send a prescription for an approved product to be filled under insurance.

Models seen in the market

The provider profile records which model each provider publishes, once verified; the field is unknown until then.

Prior authorisation

Most plans that cover GLP-1s for weight management require prior authorisation with documented BMI, comorbidities and often a prior lifestyle programme, and some employers exclude weight-management drugs entirely. The prior authorisation guide covers what providers do to help.

What to ask a provider

Whether they will prescribe an approved product to be filled under insurance; whether they submit prior authorisations and what they charge for it; whether visits are billed to insurance or paid as a fee; and what the fee is. The answers go into the true-cost calculation like any other charge.

Questions this page answers

Will insurance cover compounded tirzepatide?
No. Insurers cover approved products; compounded preparations are not approved and are cash-pay everywhere we have looked.
Which providers accept insurance?
The provider profile records insurance acceptance and prior-authorisation support once verified from the provider's pages. As of the latest build no provider has that field verified, so no list is shown; the best-providers page adds an insurance category when three do.
