Questions to ask a GLP-1 provider before you pay

Twelve questions whose answers determine the true cost and the terms of a GLP-1 telehealth plan, with the answer already recorded on each provider profile where the provider publishes it.

Ask these in writing, by chat or email, and keep the answers. Where a provider publishes the answer, it is already on the provider profile with the source quoted; where it does not, the profile says “not published” and the question is the only way to find out.

Price

  1. Is the advertised price the recurring price, or a first-month price? If introductory, what is the price from month two and for how long is the introductory price available?
  2. Does the price include the medication, or is medication charged separately?
  3. Is there a membership, program or platform fee? How much, how often, and is it required?
  4. Is the initial consultation charged? Are follow-ups charged? How often are follow-ups required?
  5. Is shipping charged per order? Are supplies (needles, syringes, alcohol swabs) included?
  6. What is the price at 5, 10 and 15 mg per week of tirzepatide (or 1, 1.7 and 2.4 mg of semaglutide)? This is the question most providers answer least clearly and the one that decides the cost of months four to twelve.

Terms

  1. Is there a minimum term? If I stop after two months of a twelve-month plan, what do I owe?
  2. How do I cancel, how much notice is required, and what happens to a shipment already in progress?
  3. What is refunded if the prescriber declines me, if I have side effects and stop, or if a shipment arrives warm or damaged?

Product

  1. Which pharmacy fills the prescription, is it a 503A pharmacy or a 503B outsourcing facility, and in which states is it licensed?
  2. Is the active ingredient the base form used in the approved product? What is the concentration, and what is added to the vial?
  3. Does the provider state that compounded medication is not FDA-approved, and where?

Turning the answers into a number

Put the answers into the true-cost calculator: recurring price, any separate medication charge, membership, consultation and follow-up fees, shipping, and the price at your likely maintenance dose.
